Montenegro’s tourism is growing due to an influx of international visitors from Russia and beyond.

Montenegro had another good month for tourism in July 2026. The number of visitors going to Montenegro increased when compared to July 2025. With the growing number interest in Montenegro, the demand for international travel to Montenegro is increased. Montenegro’s natural beauty with its coastal areas and scenic towns and mountains combined with increasing international travel demands make Montenegro an appealing travel destination.

Tourist arrivals reached 244,754 in July 2026, marking a 4.4% increase compared with the same period last year. The growth followed a stronger 5.8% rise recorded in June, showing that Montenegro tourism maintained steady momentum during the busy summer travel season.

International travellers remained the backbone of the country’s tourism performance. Foreign visitors accounted for the overwhelming majority of arrivals, representing more than nine out of every ten tourists who entered the destination during the month.

Foreign Tourists Continue to Lead Montenegro’s Tourism Expansion

Foreign travellers played the most significant role in driving Montenegro’s tourism growth, contributing 225,824 arrivals in July 2026. This represented 92.3% of all recorded tourist visits, demonstrating the country’s strong position among international holiday destinations.

Domestic travellers accounted for 18,930 arrivals, making up 7.7% of the total visitor numbers. While local tourism continued to contribute to the overall market, international demand remained the primary force behind the country’s summer performance.

The figures reflect Montenegro’s growing popularity among global travellers, particularly those seeking coastal escapes, cultural experiences, outdoor adventures, and nature-based holidays. The country’s combination of Adriatic beaches, UNESCO-listed heritage sites, and mountain attractions continues to attract visitors looking for diverse experiences within a compact destination.

The strong foreign visitor share also highlights the importance of international connectivity and regional travel links, which have helped Montenegro strengthen its presence in the competitive European tourism market.

Europe Remains Montenegro’s Largest Source Market for Visitors

European travellers continued to dominate the international tourism landscape in Montenegro, accounting for 81.3% of all foreign arrivals in July 2026.

The leading European source markets included Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the United Kingdom, Russia, and Poland. These markets continued to demonstrate strong demand for holidays in Montenegro, supported by geographical proximity, cultural connections, improved transport links, and the destination’s reputation as an attractive Adriatic getaway.

Visitors from neighbouring Balkan countries remained particularly important due to easy access and established travel patterns. At the same time, increasing interest from Western European markets, including the United Kingdom, reflects the wider international recognition of Montenegro as a premium yet accessible holiday destination.

The continued arrival of European travellers underlines the country’s ability to attract different segments, from beach holidaymakers and families to adventure seekers and cultural explorers.

Montenegro Attracts Growing Interest Beyond Europe

Although Europe remained the dominant source region, travellers from outside the continent also contributed significantly to Montenegro’s tourism performance.

Non-European markets represented 18.7% of foreign arrivals in July 2026. Among these international markets, Israel, the United States, and China, including Hong Kong, recorded the largest shares.

The growing presence of long-haul visitors highlights the expanding global visibility of Montenegro. International travellers are increasingly discovering the destination for its combination of coastal beauty, historic attractions, luxury experiences, and outdoor activities.

For visitors from markets such as the United States and China, Montenegro offers an alternative European experience with fewer crowds compared with some of the continent’s more established destinations. Its dramatic coastline, medieval cities, and scenic national parks continue to strengthen its appeal among travellers seeking unique European destinations.

Seaside Resorts Remain the Heart of Montenegro Tourism

Coastal areas continued to dominate tourist preferences in Montenegro, confirming the country’s reputation as one of the Adriatic’s most attractive seaside destinations.

Seaside resorts accounted for 82.1% of all tourist arrivals in July 2026, making them by far the most popular accommodation locations. The strong performance of coastal destinations reflects continued demand for beach holidays, waterfront experiences, and summer leisure travel.

The capital city followed with 9.4% of arrivals, benefiting from growing interest in urban tourism, business travel, cultural exploration, and short city breaks. Mountain resorts attracted 5.3% of visitors, highlighting the rising popularity of nature-based and adventure tourism experiences. Other resorts accounted for the remaining 3.2%.

The distribution of visitors shows that while the Adriatic coastline remains the centre of Montenegro tourism, other regions are gradually gaining attention by offering alternative experiences beyond traditional summer holidays.

Overnight Stays Reveal Strong Dependence on International Tourism

Tourist accommodation data further confirmed the strength of international demand in Montenegro. Collective accommodation facilities recorded 1,081,249 overnight stays in July 2026.

Foreign visitors generated 91.6% of these overnight stays, while domestic travellers contributed 8.4%. The figures indicate that international tourists are not only driving arrival numbers but also playing a crucial role in accommodation demand and tourism revenue.

The strong overnight stay performance reflects longer holiday patterns among international visitors, particularly those choosing coastal resorts and multi-day experiences across the country.

As Montenegro continues investing in tourism infrastructure, hospitality services, and destination promotion, the country is positioning itself for sustained growth in the competitive European travel market.

The July 2026 results show that Montenegro tourism remains resilient, with international travellers continuing to fuel expansion. With strong demand from Europe, rising interest from overseas markets, and continued popularity of its seaside resorts, the destination is strengthening its role as a leading Mediterranean travel hotspot.
