South Korea, China, Russia, Malaysia, and India fuel Thailand’s tourism boom in 2024, with over five million visitors boosting the economy and travel sector.

Thailand, Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy, welcomed approximately 5.5 million international visitors between January 1 and February 16, generating more than 270 billion baht (US$7.9 million) in tourism revenue. According to Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the top five visitor sources during this period were Malaysia, China, Russia, South Korea, and India.

China has historically been Thailand’s largest tourist market, with 6.7 million Chinese travelers visiting in 2023. However, concerns over safety have cast a shadow on Chinese travel to Thailand following the high-profile kidnapping of Chinese actor Wang Xing, also known as Xing Xing, in January.

This incident has significantly impacted travel sentiment, leading to a staggering 94% surge in flight cancellations from Chinese tourists in January. Early February data suggests that bookings continue to lag behind 2024 figures, raising concerns for the Thai tourism industry.

Despite these setbacks, officials remain optimistic. The Ministry of Tourism anticipates an upward trend in arrivals over the coming weeks, supported by major sporting and tourism events, streamlined entry procedures, and favorable travel conditions.

In 2023, Thailand recorded 35.5 million foreign arrivals, reaffirming its position as one of Southeast Asia’s most sought-after destinations. Looking ahead, the country has set an ambitious target of attracting 40 million international visitors in 2024, including 9 million from China.
