The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has highlighted the growing economic importance of international tourism through its latest Economic Impact Research, covering 184 countries and economies and 28 geographical and economic regions. Spain’s Travel & Tourism sector is forecast to contribute more than €269 billion to its economy in 2026, while India is expected to generate US$286.1 billion. Other major markets, including Japan, the United States, Malta, Italy, Türkiye and Mexico, have also recorded significant tourism contributions or growth projections. The findings underline the industry’s importance for national economies, employment, international visitor spending and long-term investment.
WTTC Economic Impact Research Covers 184 Countries and Economies Worldwide
WTTC’s annual Economic Impact Research, developed with Oxford Economics, examines the contribution of Travel & Tourism to national economies. The research covers 184 countries and economies, including Spain, India, Japan, the United States, Malta, Italy, Türkiye and Mexico.
It measures tourism’s contribution to gross domestic product, employment, international visitor spending, domestic tourism expenditure and investment. The findings help governments and tourism businesses understand how travel supports economic activity.
However, not every country receives a separate public announcement. WTTC publishes selected country findings alongside regional and global research. The latest available figures also cover different reporting periods. Some represent 2026 forecasts, while others describe completed 2025 results.

WTTC forecasts growth of 4.1%, revised upwards from its earlier projection of 3.7%. The expected increase exceeds Spain’s projected overall economic growth of 2.7%. It also surpasses the tourism growth forecasts for Europe, at 3.1%, and the world, at 2.5%.
Spain’s tourism sector contributed €259 billion in 2025, representing 15.3% of national GDP and supporting approximately 3.2 million jobs. International visitor spending reached €115.8 billion in 2025, demonstrating the importance of overseas travel demand.

India Forecast to Generate US$286.1 Billion Through Travel and Tourism
India is another major tourism economy highlighted in WTTC’s 2026 research. The organisation forecasts that Travel & Tourism will contribute US$286.1 billion to India’s economy in 2026, representing growth of 8.5%.
The sector is also expected to support approximately 48.1 million jobs. These figures demonstrate the scale of India’s tourism economy and its importance for employment. The growth forecast is higher than those reported for Spain, Italy and Türkiye in the selected WTTC announcements.

However, the comparison should be treated carefully because the countries have different economic structures, tourism markets and spending patterns. India’s figures represent projections rather than completed annual results.

Malta’s Tourism Sector Forecast to Contribute US$4.9 Billion
Malta’s Travel & Tourism sector is expected to contribute approximately US$4.9 billion to the country’s economy in 2026. According to WTTC, this represents 16.9% of national GDP. The sector is also forecast to support around 72,200 jobs.
These figures highlight tourism’s importance to Malta’s economy, particularly when measured as a share of national output. Although Malta’s total tourism contribution is smaller than those of India, Spain and the United States, the GDP share demonstrates its significant role within the country. WTTC’s figures provide an economic outlook rather than a final assessment of 2026 tourism performance.

Italy’s Travel and Tourism Economy Expected to Grow 3.8%
Italy is forecast to record 3.8% growth in its Travel & Tourism economic contribution during 2026. The projection was included in WTTC’s May 2026 global tourism outlook. The forecast places Italy among the European markets expected to experience positive tourism growth. Italy’s established tourism economy includes cultural heritage, historic cities, coastal destinations and international leisure travel.

However, the cited WTTC announcement does not provide a directly comparable 2026 tourism GDP value or employment figure for Italy. Therefore, the 3.8% forecast should be reported as a growth projection rather than a completed economic result.

Türkiye Tourism Economy Forecast to Expand 3.7% in 2026
Türkiye is expected to record 3.7% growth in its Travel & Tourism economic contribution during 2026. The projection also comes from WTTC’s May global economic outlook. The forecast indicates continued growth in a country with a significant international leisure tourism industry. Türkiye’s tourism offering includes Istanbul, Antalya, Cappadocia and other established destinations.
However, the WTTC source used for this comparison does not establish a specific 2026 tourism GDP contribution or employment total for Türkiye. The reported 3.7% therefore remains a forecast and should not be presented as confirmed annual growth.

Japan’s Tourism Economy Contributes US$343.1 Billion
Japan recorded a Travel & Tourism economic contribution of US$343.1 billion in 2025, according to WTTC’s September 2026 announcement. The sector accounted for 8.1% of the country’s GDP. Japan’s tourism economy includes international visitor spending, domestic travel and related economic activity. The figure highlights the industry’s importance to one of Asia’s largest economies.

However, Japan’s US$343.1 billion represents a 2025 result, while the figures for Spain and India are 2026 forecasts. The different reporting periods mean the figures should not be used to establish a definitive ranking for 2026.

United States Remains the World’s Largest Travel and Tourism Economy
The United States recorded a Travel & Tourism contribution of US$2.63 trillion in 2025. According to WTTC, this makes the country the world’s largest tourism economy by total economic contribution. The figure reflects the scale of domestic and international travel activity across the United States. Tourism supports accommodation, transport, attractions, food services and other related industries.
However, the US$2.63 trillion figure describes economic contribution, not international visitor spending alone. It should also be distinguished from the 2026 forecasts reported for Spain, India and Malta.

Mexico Records Positive Tourism Economic Growth in 2025
Mexico’s Travel & Tourism sector recorded economic growth of 1.8% in 2025, according to WTTC’s May 2026 announcement. The organisation highlighted Mexico’s tourism performance within North America. The country benefits from established leisure destinations, cultural attractions and international travel connections.

However, the 1.8% figure measures tourism economic growth during 2025. It should not be presented as a forecast for 2026 or directly compared with projected growth rates for other countries without explaining the different periods.

WTTC Research Highlights Tourism’s Importance Across Global Economies
The country findings demonstrate how Travel & Tourism contributes to economic activity in different markets. Spain and India are expected to record positive growth in 2026, while Malta’s tourism sector represents a significant share of its national economy.
Japan and the United States have reported substantial tourism contributions for 2025, while Mexico recorded positive annual growth. Italy and Türkiye also feature in WTTC’s 2026 growth forecasts.
However, these findings do not establish that every country is growing at the same rate. Different economic conditions, international travel patterns and domestic tourism demand influence national performance.
Tourism Investment, Employment and Sustainability Remain Important Priorities
WTTC identifies investment, connectivity, workforce development, sustainability and innovation as important priorities for the industry’s future. The organisation also highlights destination management, artificial intelligence and diversification of visitor markets. These priorities are relevant to countries seeking to improve tourism competitiveness while supporting local communities.

For governments and tourism businesses, economic impact research provides a basis for assessing the industry’s contribution to jobs and national output. However, forecasts remain subject to revision as economic conditions and travel demand change.

WTTC’s latest findings highlight the economic importance of Travel & Tourism across several major destinations. Spain’s tourism economy is forecast to exceed €269 billion in 2026, while India’s contribution is expected to reach US$286.1 billion.
Malta, Italy and Türkiye also have positive 2026 outlooks. Japan, the United States and Mexico have reported significant 2025 economic results. Together, these findings demonstrate tourism’s role in supporting national economies, employment and international travel. WTTC’s Economic Impact Research covers 184 countries and economies, but individual national findings must be assessed using their correct reporting years and economic measures.
